Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

River Hawks Fall to No. 17 New Hampshire, 5-0

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. - Junior Adam Henry (Fort Myers, Fl.) made a personal-best 12 saves in net, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (2-10-3, 0-6-0 AE) fell to the #17 New Hampshire Wildcats (10-1-4, 3-0-3 AE), 5-0, on Thursday night at Cushing Field.

Senior Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia) led the River Hawks' offense with two shots on the night. Freshman Daniele Mastroianni (Montréal, Quebec) and sophomore Liam Ireland (Yarmouth, Maine) added one shot on goal each. In net, Henry played all 90 minutes en route to his new career-high.

It didn't take long for the Wildcats to strike first, as with 1:20 on the clock they claimed a 1-0 lead. After taking the ball away from the River Hawks, the hosts sent a pass down half the length of the field for Taig Healy, who drilled a shot past the diving keeper to give his team the early advantage. The Wildcat offense continued to pressure the hosts, stringing together four more shots in the opening ten minutes, but two big saves by Henry and a block by the defense kept the deficit to one.

In the 20th minute, the River Hawks found themselves with an excellent opportunity to get on the board. After intercepting a Wildcats' pass, graduate student Denis Petro (Michalovce, Slovakia) weaved through three defenders to find an opening in the box. The defender unleashed a rocket of a shot with his left foot but missed just to the top-left of the net as the score remained the same. Throughout the remainder of the half, New Hampshire pushed the UMass Lowell defense, striking again in the 44th minute to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, the River Hawks began to find more possession time, firing off two of the first five shots of the period. Sprinting down the field alongside the defense, Mastroianni made an excellent play to save the ball from going out of play, popping it up to Francés Poquet just in front of the net. The midfielder connected on the ball midair with his right foot, but sent the shot just over the top of the net.

In the final 20 minutes of the match, the Wildcats added three goals, extending their lead to 5-0 and sealing their victory.

Next up, the River Hawks will finish up the season when they hit the road to take on the Bryant Bulldogs on Tuesday, October 31. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
