River Hawks Fall to No. 24 Bryant, 3-0, in Season Finale

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The UMass Lowell men's soccer team (2-11-3, 0-7-0 AE) fell to the #24 Bryant Bulldogs (14-1-2, 4-1-2 AE), 3-0, in the season finale on Tuesday night at Bulldog Soccer Field.

"It obviously has been a tough season from the results side of things," said Head Coach Kyle Zenoni. "We played well tonight, but a few mistakes hurt us at the end of the day. The effort these guys put in all game and season is truly amazing. The results will come. Last season, we had a hard time competing in games, and now this season we're right there with every team we play. We will continue to grow the program, and we will learn to win, which is the next step for these guys. The future is bright for this program."

Graduate student Javier Torres (Málaga, Spain) and sophomore Iñaki Esnaola (Junin, Argentina) led the River Hawks offense, each logging a shot on goal. Senior Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia), junior Santiago Delfino (Cordoba, Argentina), and junior Shunnosuke Nakajima (Yokohama, Japan) all contributed with a shot as well. In net, junior Adam Henry (Fort Myers, Fl.) finished with two saves.

In the opening minutes, the two teams went back and forth in the battle for possession. In the 10th minute, after a foul was called just outside the box against the River Hawks, the Bulldogs used the opportunity to send the free-kick towards the net. The UMass Lowell defense was able to block the shot attempt, as well as the follow-up shot off the rebound, but the third shot was sent into the top of the goal, giving the hosts the 1-0 advantage.

Following the goal, the River Hawks controlled the ball as they moved it down the field and looked for the opportunity to retaliate. After making a move to get past two defenders, graduate student Denis Petro (Michalovce, Slovakia) dished a pass to Torres just outside the box. The Spain native then laced a shot toward the bottom-left corner of the net, but a diving save by the hosts' goalie kept it a one-score game.

Although the UMass Lowell defense fought off a handful of attempts by Bryant, the Bulldogs added another goal in the 42nd minute, leading to the 2-0 score at the half.

Coming out of the break, both teams put emphasis on defense, as each side went without a shot for over ten minutes. However, with 58:15 on the clock, Bryant's Vincente Valor Martinez found the back of the net, extending his teams lead to 3-0. The Bulldogs offense continued to pressure the River Hawks with four shots over the next 20 minutes. The defense continued to battle, though, as a big save by Henry and a couple key blocked shots kept the deficit to three.

In the final ten minutes, the River Hawks looked to find a way on the board with scoring attempts from Nakajima and Francés Poquet, but both shots missed just over the top of the net, sealing the 3-0 decision.

"I'm grateful to the seniors," commented Zenoni. "They have been through a lot during their time here, and I'm truly thankful for all of them. They left this place better than they found and it and that is all you can ask for."
