River Hawks Set for Two Game Trip At Siena, Rhode Island

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Men's soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 AE) heads on the road for the first time this season to take on the Siena Saints (1-0-0, 0-0-0 MAAC) at Hickey Field on Monday, August 29 before heading to Kingston, Rhode Island to take on the Rhode Island Rams (0-0-1, 0-0-0 A10) on Friday, September 2.

LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks opened the season with a 2-0 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. Sophomore Viljar Byrkjeland (Norheimsund, Norway) opened the scoring for the River Hawks with a goal in the 19th minute, and junior Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia) sealed the decision with a penalty kick goal before the end of the first half. In net, senior Jacob Heihsel (Holliston, Mass.) saw an entire 90 minutes of action, recording one save in the shutout. The win marked the first of head coach Kyle Zenoni's career.
 
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
The Saints host the River Hawks after opening the season with a 1-0 road victory over Sacred Heart. Bilal Hersi recorded the only goal for Siena, while Erik Reis and Jesper Schone Vogtengen both tallied an assist. In net for the Saints, Greg Monroe logged a complete game while tallying three saves in the shutout.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
Monday will be only the second time the two teams have faced, with the River Hawks claiming a 1-0 victory in overtime on August 30, 2021. Borna Miklic claimed victory for UMass Lowell with a goal in the 93rd minute.
 
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Rhode Island began the season with a 1-1 tie on the road against #21 Penn State. The lone goal scorer for the Rams was Rafa Villanueva, who also led the team with four shots and two shots on goal. In net, Max Hinke played the entire game, allowing one goal without collecting a save.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
The River Hawks and Rams have only met once prior to Friday's matchup. Rhode Island took down UMass Lowell, 1-0, on March 3rd, 2021.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win against Siena would have the River Hawks at 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2017. Taking down Rhode Island would mark the first time in program history the River Hawks beat the Rams.
