AMESBURY, Mass.—The UMass Lowell men's hockey team had 22 student-athletes selected to the 2021-22 Hockey East All-Academic Team, as announced Monday afternoon by the league.

Sitting just behind Merrimack with 25 honorees, the River Hawks tied for second in the conference alongside Maine, who also earned 22 nominees.

Leading the way for UMass Lowell, graduate student Connor Sodergren (Tewksbury, Mass.) capped his career as a River Hawk with his fifth All-Academic Team nod for surpassing the 3.0 threshold in each semester of his playing career.

Seniors Lucas Condotta (Georgetown, Ontario), Sam Knoblauch (Rochester, Mich.), Jon McDonald (Livonia, Mich.), Owen Savory (Cambridge, Ontario) and Reid Stefanson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) all were named Hockey East Distinguished Scholars after registering a 3.0 in each semester of their four varsity seasons.

For his hard work in the classroom, Knoblauch also earned the Hockey East Top Scholar-Athlete distinction, awarded to those achieving a perfect 4.0 for the season. Additionally, the forward was one of 11 players selected to the 2021-22 Hockey East Academic All-Star Team.

Seven River Hawk juniors—Carl Berglund (Hammaro, Sweden), Brian Chambers (Weymouth, Mass.), Zach Kaiser (Orangeville, Ontario), Josh Latta (West Vancouver, B.C.), Marek Korencik (Zilina, Slovakia), Jordan Schulting (Penticton, B.C.) and Blake Wells (Blackie, Alberta)—made their way onto the team for the third time in their careers.

Graduate student Nick Austin (St. Louis Park, Minn.), junior Andre Lee (Karlstad, Sweden), sophomores Nik Armstrong-Kingkade (Mannheim, Germany), Ben Meehan (Walpole, Mass.), Jackson Sterrett (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and Henry Welsch (Lakeville, Minn.), as well as freshmen Owen Cole (Dunnville, Ontario), Isac Jonsson (Angelholm, Sweden) and Edvard Nordlund (Nacka, Sweden) rounded out the list for the River Hawks. The honor marked the second of Armstrong-Kingkade, Lee and Sterrett's careers.

UMass Lowell's 22 student-athletes were part of a group of 186 student-athletes who posted a GPA of 3.0 or better in both semesters during the past season. This year, the UMass Lowell hockey program was the recipient of the university's Bob Griffin Academic Award after earning a combined 3.60 GPA. The honor is bestowed annually upon the men's and women's program with the highest grade point average at the end of each academic year.
