LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (4-10, 1-2 AE) fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves (9-2, 2-0 AE), 16-1, at Cushing Field on Saturday afternoon.
"Stony Brook is a very good team with an outstanding defense," said head coach
Lisa Miller. "We'll continue to work hard to develop the confidence and mentality to play with a top five team."
Junior
Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the River Hawks, while freshman
Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) led the team with two draw controls. In net, graduate student
Alex Salim (East Islip, N.Y.) tallied a game-high ten saves.
The Seawolves jumped out to a quick lead, tallying three goals in the first four minutes of play. However, the River Hawk defense quickly stepped up, causing multiple turnovers and a save over the next five minutes, holding Stony Brook to three goals. With just over five minutes remaining in the first, the Seawolves tallied their fourth goal, followed by two more, taking a six-goal lead after one.
In the second quarter, the Seawolves struck first again, this time in a woman-up situation, to take the 7-0 lead. Despite several key stops from the River Hawk defense, Stony Brook was able to continue their scoring streak, tallying four more goals, taking an 11-0 lead heading into the break.
In the third quarter, UMass Lowell played lock down defense, allowing only one goal in the entire quarter. The River Hawk offense continued to find good looks but were unable to find the back of the net until Liquori fired one past the keeper on a free-position shot, tallying the first goal of the game for UMass Lowell. Both defenses would continue to hold strong, as the Seawolves maintained their 12-1 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Stony Brook added in four more goals, finalizing the 16-1 score.
Prior to the game, Salim,
Natalie Choate (Spencerport, N.Y.) and
