STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (4-11, 0-0 AE) fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves (5-11, 0-0 AE) by a score of 6-4 on Friday afternoon.
"It was a good baseball game today," said head coach
Ken Harring. "They [Stony Brook] capitalized on a mistake on our end and got a big hit. That hit ended up being the difference in the game. We will bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow."
Graduate student
Ryan Towle (Westfield, Mass.) pitched 5.1 innings, striking out 10 hitters and allowing four earned runs in the loss. Senior
Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) led the offense with three hits, two RBIs, and one run in five appearances at the plate. Five other River Hawks recorded a hit on Friday,
The Seawolves got in front early, scoring off a double to right center for a 1-0 lead. Gallagher's fourth home run of the year tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. The hosts responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead into the fifth.
Freshman
Jacob Humphrey (Standish, Maine) singled to kick off the sixth for UMass Lowell. The freshman stole second with senior
Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J.) at the plate, putting a runner in scoring position. With two on and one out, Gallagher hit a single to center to score
Cedric Rose, making it a 6-2 game. Siracusa reached on a fielder's choice and freshman
Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) came in to score, cutting the lead to 6-3. Sophomore
Brendan Williams (Auburn, N.Y.) got out of a bases loaded jam to keep it a three-run game moving to the eighth inning.
Junior
Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) hit a solo shot to left field to cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the eighth. Sophomore
Zach Fortuna (Newburyport, Mass.) entered the game pitched a scoreless eighth, giving the River Hawks a chance to get back in the game. However, UMass Lowell was unable to score in the ninth and the Seawolves took game one 6-4.
