STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Junior
Kaylen Banwareesingh (Bronx, N.Y.) hit the game-winning layup with 2.5 seconds left to play, as the UMass Lowell women's basketball team (10-14, 7-8 AE) took down the conference leading Stony Brook Seawolves (23-4, 14-3 AE) on Wednesday night.
Sophomore
Baylee Teal (Penfield, N.Y.) scored a career-high 16 points and added four assists to lead the way for the River Hawks. Junior
Denise Solis (Windsor, Conn.) and freshman
Ivory Finley (Minneapolis, Minn.) added 12 points each and four and three rebounds, respectively.
Senior
Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) picked up eight points, surpassing 1,000 career points. Idom becomes just the second player in the Division I era to reach the mark. She also added a team-high six rebounds and three assists.
India Pagan scored a game-high 20 points for Stony Brook. Anastasia Warren added 16, while Gigi Gonzalez put up 11 points.
Stony Brook went up 11-4 before triple from Teal started 7-0 River Hawk run to tie the game, but the Seawolves led 19-15 after one. Pagan had 10 first quarter points for the hosts.
The River Hawks clawed back from another seven-point deficit behind another scoring run led by Teal. Idom added five points at the end of the quarter to give UMass Lowell their first lead with a minute and change in the first. The Seawolves answered and led 40-39 at the break.
The River Hawks shot 44% from the field and 6-13 from distance in the first half.
A 6-0 run for Stony Brook pushed their lead to 52-45 at the media break of the third quarter. The Seawolves led by nine twice in the third, including a 59-50 lead to end the frame.
Out of the break, Teal hit her fourth triple of the night to cut the lead to seven. The River Hawks came back and took a 62-61 lead, as the teams started exchanging baskets. With 1:20 left and a 65-64 lead, Stony Brook called timeout.
Finley hit a triple with 42 seconds left to give UMass Lowell a 67-65 lead. Strong defensive work from Solis forced a tough shot and the junior collected the defensive rebound. Idom then hit one of two at the line to make it a 68-65 lead.
Warren knocked down a three to tie the game for Stony Brook with six seconds left.
The River Hawks called timeout with only seconds remaining. Banwareesingh hit a layup with 2.5 seconds left to put UMass Lowell ahead 70-68 and secure the win. The River Hawks went on a 20-9 run to close out the game.
