River Hawks Earn 4-2 Victory at Northeastern

DEDHAM, Mass. – The offense continues to impress this season, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (8-3) defeated Northeastern (2-8), 4-2, on the road on Sunday.

"I loved how we showed up today," said Head Coach Shannon LeBlanc. "We had energy, stayed committed to our structure and played a tremendous, two-way game. Our attack and midfield pressed well and created a lot of opportunities, and our defense once again controlled possession. The coaching staff is continually proud of this team and their commitment to playing high-level hockey."

The decision marked the River Hawks' fifth game this season with at least three goals. Graduate student Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) led the way with one goal and one assist for three points. As a team, the River Hawks outshot Northeastern, 22-11, with a 10-4 advantage on corners.

On the opposite end of the field, junior Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands) recorded five saves for the win.

The Huskies registered a corner in the opening minute of play, but the River Hawks would quickly take control of the momentum with two corners of their own. The visitors then jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in first, as an initial shot rang the post and senior Berbel Rozema (Rotterdam, Netherlands) followed with the no-look putback that just squeaked across the goal line.

In the 17^th minute, graduate student Caitlin Little (Acton, Mass.) dribbled the ball over the 25-yard line and sent it into the circle, where senior Kate Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was able to push it through the final two defenders, extending the margin to 2-0 at the break.

The Huskies cut the difference in half on an off-balance shot by Mak Graves in the first minute of the third quarter. However, the River Hawks quickly responded, as Berger positioned herself on the post for a deflection up and in on a corner.

UMass Lowell added one more tally in the outing on another corner in the fourth quarter when the team connected three solid passes that resulted in a goal by freshman Meike Vischer (The Hague, Netherlands).

Northeastern would chip away at the buffer in the final minutes with a hard shot by Emilia Adragna from the top of circle, but the River Hawks would hold on for the 4-2 decision.

UMass Lowell returns to America East action on Friday, October 7 for a trip to Vermont.
