River Hawks Outlast Dartmouth, 4-3, in Offensive Showdown

HANOVER, N.H. – Five different River Hawks registered points, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (10-5) outlasted Dartmouth (3-9) in a 4-3 offensive showdown on Sunday afternoon.

With the decision, the River Hawks have secured their first ever 10-win season at the Division I level.

"I am extremely proud of this group and the resilience they've shown on this five-game road swing," said Head Coach Shannon LeBlanc. "To set a record today with the most wins in Division I history is very special. I thought the game today was a little bit chaotic, however, the changes we made today from Friday in our intention and work rate were exactly what we were looking for. Also, I think this is the perfect time to recognize our senior leadership, especially our captains, who have done a good job winning the locker room, which is translating into wins on the field. This is a special team and we are looking forward to being home next week against Bryant."

Senior Megan Salsinha (Westport, Mass.) logged her first career goal in the outing, while junior Alissia de Vries (The Hague, Netherlands) recorded a career-high two assists. Junior Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands) totaled seven saves in the contest, as well.

Although senior Berbel Rozema (Rotterdam, Netherlands) accounted for the first two shots of the day, the Big Green tallied the first goal of the afternoon in the 12th minute of action when Meg Barnes dished a pass up ahead and into the circle for the finish by Emilia Callahan.

However, less than two minutes later the River Hawks responded on a corner. Freshman Meike Vischer (The Hague, Netherlands) put an initial shot on goal that was kicked out by Dartmouth's Hatley Post, but de Vries was at the top of the circle to keep play alive, dishing the ball back towards the traffic in front of the cage, where Salsinha was planted for the one-timer that finished the equalizer.

Two stops on either side highlighted the second quarter, sending the game into the break still even. The visitors came out of halftime on an offensive mission, though, surging for three, third-quarter goals. Freshman Isabelle Halters (Noordwijk, Netherlands) first went top shelf with a reverse stick chip in the opening seconds of the frame to give the visitors their first lead of the day. A minute later, UMass Lowell earned a penalty stroke and put the ball on graduate student Jenna Berger's (Waterloo, Ontario) stick, who threaded an attempt into the bottom corner to give her side a two-goal edge at 3-1.

Myah Pease would close the gap back to one in the 34th minute on a penalty stroke of her own, but Rozema got a stick on a long ball sent into the circle by de Vries, beating the keeper high in the 40th minute and stretching the difference to 4-2.

The Big Green continued to battle and was back within one early in the fourth quarter, as Lila Browne backhanded in a second chance opportunity, but the visitors were able to play strong defense down the stretch and hold on for the victory.

The River Hawks are back home on Saturday, October 22 when they host Bryant in an America East matchup at 1 p.m.
