River Hawks Visit Maine for Midweek Matchup

LOWELL, Mass. – Fresh off a first America East Conference win of the season, the UMass Lowell women's basketball (4-7, 1-1 AE) will travel to Orono, Maine to take on the University of Maine Black Bears on Wednesday, January 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
UMass Lowell enters Wednesday's game after picking up a first America East Conference win of the season against UMBC on January 17. Five River Hawks hit double-digit points, with junior Denise Solis (Windsor, Conn.) leading the way with 15 points, shooting 6-9 on the afternoon. Sophomore Jaini Edmonds (Worcester, Mass.) scored 14, shooting 6-9 from the field. Juniors Shamyjha Price (Pittsburgh, Penn.) and Kaylen Banwareesingh (Bronx, N.Y.) each scored 11 each while sophomore Leilani Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.) recorded 10 points. As a team, the River Hawks picked up 23 defensive boards against the Retrievers.
 
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
The Black Bears welcome UMass Lowell after beating New Hampshire 77-51 on January 13. Anne Simon leads the team averaging 16.3 points per game, second best in the league. Maeve Carroll averages 10.6 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game, also second best in the league. Simon also leads the conference in steals per game with 2.6. Maine is 3-2 in America East action this season, with wins over Vermont, Hartford, and New Hampshire and losses to NJIT and Stony Brook.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would be the first win over Maine since January 15, 2020. A win would also snap a four-game losing skid against the Black Bears.
 
FREE THROW SUCCESS
The River Hawks have had plenty of success from the free throw line to start the 2021-22 season, going 95-138 through ten games. UMass Lowell shot a season-high 7-8 from the stripe against Michigan on November 16 and went 15-19 on November 13 against Bryant and November 24 against CCSU.
 
A DIME A DOZEN
Senior Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.), Jaini Edmonds, and Leilani Rodriguez lead the team with double-digit assists each through eleven games this season. Idom has tallied 25 dimes, while Edmonds and Rodriguez have recorded 17 assists each. Shamyjha Price has picked up 12 assists on the season. Solis and Baylee Teal have each recorded ten assists this season, as well.
 
THREES COMPANY
The River Hawks scored a season-high 11 three pointers against UMBC, shooting 11-18 for 61% from beyond the arc. It is the most three pointers scored in a single game by UMass Lowell since the team hit 10 against UMBC on February 18, 2017.
 
BOARDS GALORE
The River Hawks have tallied a total of 380 rebounds this season. The team averages 34.5 rebounds per game with the seventh best rebounding margin in the league.
 
FIELD GOAL GETTER
With 43 made field goals on 78 attempts, Denise Solis leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 55.1% on the year, second best in the America East Conference.
 
FRESHMAN IMPACT
Ivory Finley has had a big impact for the River Hawks in her rookie campaign. The freshman has scored 66 points in ten games off the bench this season. She has also tallied 41 rebounds and 11 steals.
 
TURN IT OVER
The River Hawks have forced 173 turnovers in the nine games this season. UMass Lowell forced a season-high 23 turnovers on November 13 against Bryant and force an average of 16.9 turnovers per game.
 
BEYOND THE ARC
As a unit, the River Hawks have hit 57 threes through eleven games, shooting 34% from behind the arc. Kharis Idom leads the team with 13 made 3FG's. Jaini Edmonds and Shamyjha Price have knocked down nine each.
