River Hawks Open AE Conference Play Against UAlbany

LOWELL, Mass. – After 22 days away from the court, the UMass Lowell women's basketball team returns to action to host the University at Albany on Wednesday, January 12. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
UMass Lowell will open their 2021-22 America East Conference schedule against UAlbany on Wednesday, January 12 at the Costello Athletic Center. The River Hawks enter Saturday after falling to Ohio (74-60) at the FIU Holiday Hoops Showcase on December 20. Senior Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) led the team with 16 points and added eight assists and five rebounds. Freshman Amaya Dowdy (Woonsocket, R.I.)  recorded her first career double-double, picking up a team-high 13 rebounds and 12 points. Two other River Hawks hit double-digit points, with junior Shamyjha Price (Pittsburgh, Penn.) picking up 11 points and sophomore Erin Lofaro (Marlboro, N.Y.) scoring 10 points. 
 
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES
UAlbany comes to Lowell on a five-game win streak. The Great Danes' last outing was their America East Conference opener, where they beat New Hampshire 50-39 at home on January 8. Helene Haegerstrand leads the team averaging 11.8 points per game. Kayla Cooper is averaging double-digits points this season as well, with 10.3 per game. Lucia Decortes has a team best 19 blocks on the year. The Great Danes currently have the top scoring defense and rebounding defense in America East.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would snap a three-game losing skid for the River Hawks and would be a first America East Conference win of the 2021-2022 season.
 
A DIME A DOZEN
Kharis Idom, sophomore Janai Edmonds (Worcester, Mass.), and sophomore Leilani Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.) lead the team with double-digit assists each through nine games this season. Idom has tallied 22 dimes, while Edmonds picked up 13 assists. Rodriguez has recorded 11 assists, while Erin Lofaro and Shamyjha Price have eight on the season.
 
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
Last year, the River Hawks won seven of their 10 home games.  More than half of their wins from last season came on the River Hawks home court. UMass Lowell is 2-1 on home court this season.
 
BOARDS GALORE
The River Hawks have tallied a total of 317 rebounds this season. The team averages 35 rebounds per game with the seventh best rebounding margin in the league.
 
 FIELD GOAL GETTER
With 34 made field goals on 65 attempts, Denise Solis leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 52.3% on the year.
 
FRESHMAN IMPACT
Freshman Ivory Finley (Minneapolis, Minn.)  has had a big impact for the River Hawks in her rookie campaign. The freshman has scored 51 points in eight games off the bench this season. She has also tallied 34 rebounds and 11 steals.
 
TURN IT OVER
The River Hawks have forced 158 turnovers in the nine games this season. UMass Lowell forced a season-high 23 turnovers on November 13 against Bryant and force an average of 17.5 turnovers per game.
 
UP NEXT
UMass Lowell will head to West Hartford, Connecticut to take on the Hartford Hawks on Saturday, January 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Chase Arena.
