LOWELL, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell baseball team (6-15, 5-7 AE) lost both ends of an America East Conference doubleheader to Stony Brook (14-7, 10-0) on Friday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.
Â
Game one ended with a 6-2 final, while game two finished with a 5-4 score in 10 innings.
Â
Several different River Hawks logged at least one hit on the day, including sophomore transfer
Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, Mass), who roped his first home run in the nightcap, and senior
Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.), who notched his second long ball of the season.
Â
UMass Lowell jumped on top in game one in its first trip to the dish. Junior
Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) kicked things off with a double to left center, followed by a sacrifice fly from senior
Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) that plated Gallagher for the first run of the day.
Â
The River Hawks would scratch across one more in the opening game, as redshirt-senior
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) drove a double down the left field line and junior
Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J.) followed with a RBI single to make it 2-0 for the home team.
Â
The advantage was short-lived, though, as Stony Brook battled back with runs in the second and fourth to equalize the score. Gallagher logged one hit for the River Hawks in the third inning, but the Seawolves were able to pull away, 6-2, in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer from Evan Giordano.
Â
Stony Brook scored in its first trip to the plate in game two, using base hits from Giordano and Shane Paradine to take an early, 1-0 advantage.
Â
However, UMass Lowell would answer in the second after another Climo double and a two-bagger down the left field line by Siracusa for his second RBI of the day.
Â
Neither team was able to plate a run in the third or fourth, but the visitors would tack on three runs over the next four to snag a 4-1 lead by the eighth.
Â
Responding in the home half of the eighth, UMass Lowell chipped away at the difference when Castellanos went yard to close the gap to 4-3.
Â
Using a last-ditch effort, the River Hawks would use Rose's round trip in the ninth to send the game into extras for the first time in 2021. However, Stony Brook would grab the final run in the top of the tenth off a wild pitch to seal the deal, 5-4.
Â
The two squads are right back at it tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
