BRIGHTON, Mass.—The UMass Lowell softball team (2-3, 0-0 AE) dropped a 9-1 decision at Boston College (5-7, 1-4 ACC) in five innings on Wednesday afternoon.
"I didn't think that we showed up to play like we normally do today," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "But, we have to learn from each game and move on quickly because conference is coming up soon."
Sophomores
Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) and
Chelsea Runyon (Scripps Ranch, Calif.) split time in the circle in today's outing against the Eagles. White kept the Eagles at bay in the opening two frames, allowing just one run and striking out one batter. Runyon relieved White in the third, finishing the afternoon with a trio of strikeouts.
Despite a hit from senior
Sarah Ratcliffe (Pelham, N.H.) to open the action for the River Hawks, the Eagles took an early 1-0 advantage at the bottom of the first off an RBI from Nicole Giery.
Looking to spark the offensive efforts for UMass Lowell, senior
Sara Siteman (Hudson, N.Y.) hit safely to open the second frame, but was kept off the scoreboard by the Eagles' fielding squad. An error allowed BC's CC Cook to reach base, but White was able to close out the inning with a strikeout.
A five-run third inning marked the difference in the matchup, with BC claiming the early advantage off a pair of base hits and a two-run homer by Kristin Giery.
Graduate student
Christina Rizzi (Manorville, N.Y.) claimed the River Hawks' lone run batted in, as her single down the left field line brought in junior
Tori Mueller (Clovis, Calif.) at the top of the fifth.
UMass Lowell heads to Hempstead, N.Y. this weekend for a four-game series beginning on Saturday, March 20, against Hofstra.
