BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Senior
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) went deep for the second straight day, but the UMass Lowell River Hawks found themselves on the short end of a pitcher's duel as the Northeastern Huskies walked-off with a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Junior
Matt Draper (Lowell, Mass.) was superb on the mound for the River Hawks, allowing just one run, while scattering five hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out four.
"It was a great ballgame," commented head coach
Ken Harring. "Our pitching continues to be fantastic, and
Matt Draper was outstanding for us today. We've played a tough non-conference schedule and have gotten better each weekend. Our bats are slowly coming alive, and we're looking forward to our first conference weekend in two years."
The River Hawks threatened to jump ahead in the top of the fourth after a leadoff single by junior
Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.). Gallagher advanced to second on a muffed pick-off attempt, but the Huskies escaped the inning, stranding him at third and leaving the game scoreless.
Northeastern broke through against Draper in the sixth. A leadoff double by Ryan Cervone and a walk put the first two men on. Draper induced a double play, moving Cervone to third, and he came into score on a two-out infield single.
The deficit was short-lived however, as Climo, who hit a grand slam on Friday, took a 1-2 pitch deep to knot the score at one.
The River Hawks tried to play small ball in the top of the ninth after senior
Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) singled to lead off the frame. Classmate
Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) sacrificed him to second, but the Huskies pitched around Climo and Martin was ultimately left at second.
After the first two Huskies reached against sophomore
Cam Seguin (Woburn, Mass.) (0-2) to lead off the ninth, Northeastern bunted them into scoring position, walking off with the win on a sacrifice fly JP Olson.
Climo and Gallagher each reached base twice to pace the River Hawk offense in the loss.
The River Hawks (1-8) now enter America East conference play, as they travel to UMBC this weekend. The team is scheduled to play two double headers with the Retrievers in the new America East schedule format for the season.
