BROOKLINE, Mass. – Despite outshooting the home team by more than double, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team fell on the road to Northeastern on Thursday evening at Parsons Field.
"We had a slow start and struggled to break Northeastern's defensive block," commented head coach Mira Novak. "We conceded a goal off a corner kick which can be a difference-maker at this level and it made it even harder for us to get forward and create quality chances. After the first 30 minutes, we changed our attitude and finished the game strong while outshooting Northeastern."
UMass Lowell drops to 0-1-1 on the season, while Northeastern is now 1-1-1.
The River Hawks outgunned the Huskies 8-4 on goal, including 15-6 in overall attempts. Junior
Hailey DuBose (Raynham, Mass.) was the only player from either side to aim more than two tries on target, while
Courtney Coleman (Antioch, Ill.),
Calliste Brookshire (Kingston, Mass.), Marisssa Saucedo (Ventura, Calif.) and Guilia Rabbito (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded one apiece.
Continuing their stalemate from Sunday, both teams were evenly matched in the opening minutes of play, each tallying their first corner kick of the night. The River Hawk's had a chance to take an early lead in the 10th minute when DuBose saw herself with a one-on-one opportunity, but Northeastern's keeper, Angeline Friel, was there to deny the advantage.
The Huskies took the lead in the 14th minute as Mikenna McManus took Northeastern's second corner-kick of the night. McManus fired one into the box where Alexis Legowski lined up for the header, just slipping past the Lowell defense. Chelsea Domond would find the back of the net only six minutes later to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead at the half.
In the second, Saucedo provided the first shot of the half off a throw in that was stopped down low by Friel in the 48th minute. The River Hawks continued to apply the pressure over the next five minutes as Brookshire and DuBose combined for four shots.
UMass Lowell had three-straight corner kicks late in the second half at the 69th minute, trying to find the equalizer. Lowell's last chance came in the 83rd minute when a shot by junior midfielder
Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) went wide.
"I was happy with our drive and determination to come back despite not scoring," stated Novak. "I think we saw some positive performances from players who came off the bench today but we still need to be more clinical in the attacking third, especially the penalty box."
The River Hawks are set to return to action next Sunday in a rematch of last season's quarterfinals. UMass Lowell will kick off conference action with Hartford at 1 p.m. on Al-Marzook Field.
