LOWELL, Mass. -- Sophomore
Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) recorded her first career shutout as the UMass Lowell women's soccer team defeated Massachusetts, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field.
Â
Three different River Hawks provided the scoring for Lowell (1-1-1) with junior
Lily Fabian netting what proved to be the game winner in the 73rd minute. Senior duo
Kristin Birgisdottir (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) and
Courtney Coleman (Antioch, Ill.) notched the other two scores just two minutes later to help distance the home squad.
Â
"We're very happy with today's win," commented head coach
Mira Novak. "Massachusetts is a strong team and I'm glad we were able to match them and break them down throughout the game. We've been working very hard and to finally score some goals, feels great. Our players put us in a good position in the first half and in the second we came out with a goal-orientated mentality."
Â
After putting up nine shots in the first half, the River Hawks finally connected in the second thanks to Fabian who received a pass from junior
Hailey DuBose (Raynham, Mass.) at 73:08. The River Hawks continued their hot shooting, dominating play with a 9-4 advantage in shots while the defense held Massachusetts (1-2-0) to just two on goal for the second frame.
Â
Birgisdottir provided a security goal soon after at 75:11 when she was dealt a long pass from Coleman. The Illinois native later made it 3-0 with a tally of her own just two minutes later at 77:06.
Â
Burgess kept the clean sheet with two saves in the second. Alyssa Chase ended the game with seven saves in the Minutewomen net.
Â
UMass Lowell will next host New Hampshire in America East action at Cushing Field on Sunday, March 14.
