LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (3-5, 0-0 AE) fell to the Towson Tigers (8-1, 0-0 CAA) 70-56 on Wednesday night at the Costello Athletic Center.
Freshman
Ivory Finley (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored a team-high 16 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Janai Edmonds (Worcester, Mass.) recorded 15 points and added two steals.
Towson opened the game knocking down two threes to take a 6-0 lead at the media timeout. The River Hawks struggled from the floor, going 0-9 until Edmonds got UMass Lowell on the board with a three. Edmonds scored five points for the River Hawks, but a difficult opening 10 minutes saw the team trailing 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the River Hawks struggled to stop the Towson offensive rhythm, trailing 29-13 at the media timeout. Out of the break, UMass Lowell came up with back-to-back stops and made shots on the offensive end to cut into the lead. Finley knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the Towson advantage to 29-17. Edmonds shot 2-3 from behind the arc in the first half and scored a team-high 10 points as the River Hawks went into the break trailing 40-22.
The River Hawks started the second half with plenty of energy, getting back-to-back scores from Finley and junior
Denise Solis (Windsor, Conn.) gave UMass Lowell the spark they needed to get back into the game. A steal from Edmonds and finish from Finley made it a 6-0 run for the River Hawks, forcing Towson into a timeout with a 42-33 lead. A few big stops at the defensive end kept Towson off the board as the media timeout hit, UMass Lowell still trailing 42-33. Junior
Shamyjha Price (Pittsburgh, Pa.) hit a long-range buzzer beater at the end of third quarter to bring the River Hawks within single digits, trailing 51-42 heading into the fourth.
The Tigers stifled the River Hawk offense in the fourth quarter, limiting them to just three points over three minutes in. Towson received two technical fouls in the fourth quarter, giving UMass Lowell an opportunity to claw back into the game. At the media timeout, the River Hawks trailed 58-45. Senior
Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) knocked down both free throws out of the break and another layup from Finley brought the River Hawks back within nine with just over five minutes to play. Towson expanded their lead late and held on to win the game 70-56. Idom finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds.
