River Hawks Host Bryant in Home Opener Saturday

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-1, 0-0 AE) will host the Bryant Bulldogs (0-1, 0-0 NEC) on Saturday afternoon in the home opener at Costello Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks enter Saturday after dropping the season opener to BU 76-47. Junior Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) led all scorers with 14 points and added six assists and three rebounds. UMass Lowell shot 33% from the field and 40% from behind the arc against Boston University. Junior Denise Solis (Windsor, Conn.) grabbed a team-best four offensive boards and added six points and two assists.
 
SCOUTING BRYANT UNIVERSITY
The Bulldogs enter Saturday's contest after dropping their season and home opener against Iona 60-56 on November 9. Alana Perkins led the team with 15 points and picked up two assists and two rebounds. Bryant shot 40% from the field and 50% from behind the arc.  Brooke Bjelko scored 13 points and added a team-high 14 rebounds. Nicole Gallagher scored 11 points off the bench for Bulldogs.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would be the first victory of the season for the River Hawks and would also give Denise King her first win as head coach.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
Saturday's game with be the seventh meeting between UMass Lowell and Bryant. The Bulldogs hold a 4-2 overall record against the River Hawks. The last time these teams met was December 2, 2019, where UMass Lowell came away with a 55-35 win in Smithfield, R.I.
 
AE FOOD FRENZY
The River Hawks will hold the #AEFoodFrenzy game on Saturday. An America East SAAC initiative, the #AEFoodFrenzy started in 2015 as a conference-wide community service initiative designed to promote cohesion between America East's member institutions while also providing significant donations to several charities in campus communities. The program will be collecting cans and non-perishable items at the entrance to the game.
