LOWELL, Mass. -Â As part of the America East's commitment to captaining social justice, UMass Lowell and its fellow conference institutions are kicking off the America East Votes Challenge in partnership with the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. The announcement comes on the heels of three successful America East Civic Engagement Conversations, which educated and engaged student-athletes on voter education resources and issues.
Â
"UMass Lowell Athletics is thrilled to be part of the America East Votes Challenge and the larger All in Democracy Challenge," said Director of Athletics Peter Casey. "One of our main priorities at UMass Lowell is to educate our student-athletes across all areas so that no matter what they choose to pursue in the future, they can lead well-rounded, successful lives. This includes civic engagement education. These River Hawks are the future of our nation and we need to make sure they fully understand the impact that they can have by exercising their right to vote."
Â
UMass Lowell and the other nine America East institutions will compete to engage student-athletes and the general student body in the voting process by working to have them pledge to vote, learn about positions and issues on their ballot and having them create a plan to vote safely and successfully. Student-athletes will be empowered to increase peer voter engagement through meaningful and impactful initiatives developed and implemented in collaboration with their campus communities.
Â
The conference will recognize the institutions that make the greatest impact and are most creative in their approaches leading up to Election Day.
Â
America East is one of several conferences partnering with the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, including the ACC, Big Ten, Big XII and Ivy League.
