NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In a game that featured six home runs, senior
Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) batted 4-for-5 with two homers of her own to help propel the UMass Lowell softball team (7-9) to a 9-7 victory at Belmont (5-14) on Wednesday.
"This was a great team win today," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "Everyone got in there and did their job to help us hold onto the lead.
Cashman also recorded seven RBI to tie an all-time, single-game program record. Junior
Olivia Labbe (Rochester, Mass.) added three walks and three runs scored, while five other River Hawks added one hit apiece, including redshirt-senior
Casey Harding (Cheshire, Conn.), who scored two runs, as well. Freshman
Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) registered the win in the circle and junior
Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) picked up the save.
The River Hawks plated the first run of the contest in their very first at-bat, as Cashman led off the game with a home run for the third time already this season. The Bruins answered with a solo homer to knot the score in the bottom of the inning, but Cashman came right back with a three-run shot in the third to score Harding, who had singled, and Labbe, who had walked, putting UMass Lowell back on top, 4-1.
The battle of long balls continued as Kristen Green tallied her second of the game to even the board at 4-4 in the home half of the third. However, senior
Marianne Sparacia (Spring Hill, Fla.) and classmate
Christina Rizzi (Manorville, N.Y.) each recorded a RBI in the fourth to regain the upper hand for the visitors, 6-4.
In the fifth, Cashman knocked in three more runs, this time on a double to center field. The Bruins threatened with two more homers in the bottom of sixth, cutting the difference to two, but Capria forced a 1-2-3 seventh to secure the 9-7 win.
The River Hawks wrap up their trip to Tennessee with five games at the Tiger Classic hosted by Memphis this weekend, Friday-Sunday, March 13-15.
