River Hawks Drop Rubber Match at Stony Brook, 10-1

Box Score (PDF)

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell softball team (25-16, 13-2 AE) dropped a 10-1 decision at Stony Brook (25-16, 9-6 AE) in six innings in this weekend's series finale on Sunday.

"I didn't feel like we played like we've been playing," said Head Coach Danielle Henderson. "We looked a little flat and on our heels, and really not attacking and going all out. At the plate, I didn't think we were swinging at the pitches we needed to be."

In the circle, senior pitcher Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) recorded two strikeouts to become just the fourth pitcher ever at UMass Lowell to reach the 300 career strikeouts milestone. On offense, sophomore Olivia Labbe (Rochester, Mass.) led the way with two hits, while junior Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) and senior Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) added one hit each.

The game started as a pitchers' duel with no hits for either side through the first two complete innings. However, Stony Brook took advantage of two River Hawk miscues in the bottom of the third to jump out to a 3-0 advantage.

Labbe sent a ball into the hole at short for her squad's first hit in the top of the fourth before Cashman made a good throw on the move to save a run and end the inning. However, back-to-back solo homers by Melissa Rahrich and Irene Rivera gave the home squad a 5-0 lead in the fifth.

The River Hawk bats came to life in the sixth, as the visitors started the inning with singles from Labbe and Cashman before Barker drove a double to left to score the lead runner and put her squad on the board. Redshirt-junior Casey Harding (Cheshire, Conn.) then drew a walk to load the bases, but the team was unable to push another run across.

The Seawolves would rally for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, though, including a three-run homer by Katelyn Corr that ended the game.

UMass Lowell still owns a 14-12 lead in the all-time series against Stony Brook. This week, the River Hawks will make the short trip to Boston College for a Tuesday afternoon tilt at 4 p.m. on April 30.
