VESTAL, N.Y. – Propelled by three home runs, including a three-run shot by redshirt-junior
Casey Harding (Cheshire, Conn.), the UMass Lowell softball team (20-12, 8-0 AE) defeated Binghamton (14-21, 3-8 AE), 6-3, to complete the weekend sweep on Sunday morning.
Â
With the decision, the River Hawks not only secure their third straight 20-win season, but remain undefeated in America East action in the midst of a 12-game win streak.
Â
"These were three good games and Binghamton kept fighting right to the end," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "I just thought we've been holding our composure and getting out there wanting to win."
Â
In addition to Harding jacking her fifth long ball of the season, sophomores
Maria Moccio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and
Sara Siteman (Hudson, N.H.) each added one of their own in the contest. Junior
Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) walked three times to put her just one shy of the program's record for free passes in a season. In the circle, senior
Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) earned her seventh win, while sophomore
Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) picked up her first save, as the duo combined for four strikeouts.
Â
Both teams stranded a runner in scoring position in the first, keeping the game scoreless until Harding stepped up in the following inning and drove a three-run home run to straightaway center. During that same at-bat, Cashman drew her third intentional walk of the weekend to load the bases before senior
Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) earned a RBI walk to make the score 4-0 after two.
Â
Talcik allowed just three hits while shutting out the Bearcats in the first four innings. Moccio extended the buffer with a lead-off blast over the fence in left in the fifth, however, Binghamton was able to get on the board with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning.
Â
Siteman's seventh-inning dinger closed out the scoring for the visitors, and although the Bearcats got one back in their last at-bat, it was not enough to overcome the 6-3 decision.
Â
UMass Lowell now leads the all-time series, 12-9, against Binghamton. The River Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, April 17 when they visit Boston University for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
