SAN JOSE, Calif. – The UMass Lowell softball team (8-12) faced a pair of setbacks to wrap up its weekend at the Spartan Invitational and its 11-game West Coast swing on Saturday.
Â
The River Hawks were first handed a 7-1 loss by Iona (1-10) in game one of the day before falling, 3-1, against Pacific (11-12) in the tournament finale.
"We weren't very sharp on defense today and needed to keep it simple at the plate," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson.
Â
Junior
Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) batted .571 with four hits on the day, while classmates
Melany Sheldon (Garbagnate, Milan, Italy) and Marianna Sparacia (Spring Hill, Fla.) added two hits apiece. Sophomore
Maria Moccio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) registered both of the team's RBI on the day. In the circle, senior
Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) and freshman
Kaylie See (Chino Hills, Calif.) recorded decisions, while sophomore
Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) posted six strikeouts.
Â
The River Hawks scored their lone run of game one against Iona in their very first at-bat, as Sparacia got on with a one-out single to left, advanced on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Moccio. However, Iona quickly pulled in front with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning.
Â
The teams combined for six runners left on base in the next two innings, although the Gaels were able to stretch their lead to 6-1 in the fourth. Iona then plated one more run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single to center and held the River Hawks off the board to secure the 7-1 outcome.
Â
In game two against Pacific, each side registered one hit in each of the first two innings, with infield singles from Cashman and Sheldon to start things off for the River Hawks.
Â
UMass Lowell threatened in the third and loaded the bases with two outs, although the squad was unable to capitalize, allowing Pacific to tally the first run of the game in the home half of the inning on a throwing miscue.
Â
Senior
Brianna West (Fairfield, Conn.) tripled to right field to start the fourth, but a RBI two-bagger extended the Tigers lead to 2-0. Moccio added a RBI double of her own in the fifth to plate Cashman and cut the difference in half until Pacific used a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to help seal the 3-1 decision.
Â
The River Hawks are now finished with tournament play and will visit Connecticut for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 19 beginning at 2 p.m.
