MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Sophomore catcher
Sara Siteman (Hudson, N.H.) accounted for the lone RBI and run scored for the UMass Lowell softball team (4-6) in a 5-1 setback against the College of Charleston (7-7) to wrap up the Holy City Showdown on Sunday.
"Today was a little disappointing, but on a positive note, we battled in the last inning," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson.
Â
In addition to Siteman, three other River Hawks chipped in with one hit each. Sophomore
Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) and senior
Kaysee Talcik (Shelton, Conn.) split time in the circle, with Capria allowing four runs to record the decision and move to 3-3 on the year.
Â
The game started out as a pitchers' duel with neither side allowing a baserunner through the first two complete innings. However, the Cougars broke open the scoring the bottom of the third, rallying for four runs on four hits, including a two-run home run by Chandler Sparkman.
Â
Freshman
Tori Mueller (Clovis, Calif.) led off the top of the fourth with an infield single to the pitcher for the River Hawks' first hit of the contest before senior
Sydney Barker (Upland, Calif.) walked in the team's next at-bat and sophomore
Sarah Ratcliffe (Pelham, N.H.) added a single up the middle, although UMass Lowell did not scratch across a run.
Â
The Cougars tacked on an unearned run in the home half of the fifth to extend their margin to 5-0. The visitors continued to battle, though, as Siteman led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to left center. Sophomore
Maria Moccio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and followed with a double and Barker drew another walk, but the squad was unable to overcome the 5-1 difference.
Â
The River Hawks have next weekend off before traveling to California for 11 games during spring break from March 8-16.
