PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 10 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team fell at No. 13 Providence, 1-0 on Saturday night at Schneider Arena in Hockey East play in the series finale.
UMass Lowell drops to 17-10-2 overall (11-6-2 HEA), while the Friars ups their record to 18-9-5 overall (11-7-2 HEA) after the victory.
"I thought it was a good effort tonight, the urgency was there," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "Obviously we couldn't generate enough chances and you have to generate more chances if you are going to score on good goaltenders in Hockey East. Credit to Providence, they came up with a huge sweep this weekend."
Providence's Tyce Thompson broke the stalemate to give Providence the 1-0 lead with 4:01 to go in the middle stanza for his sixth tally of the season, which stood up as the game-winner.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period with the Friars holding an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore forward
Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ont.) won 5-of-7 face offs for the River Hawks in the opening stanza.
Senior goaltender
Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) recorded 28 stops in his 12
th start of the season, while PC's Hayden Hawkey posted 21 saves in his 18
th win of the season for the Friars. Hernberg recorded 11 saves in the first and third periods in the losing effort.
Freshman defenseman
Chase Blackmun (Hudson, Wis.) finished the night with a game-high five shots on goal.
