Tyler Wall amassed 35 saves in his 50th career victory for UMass Lowell
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior goalie Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) notched 35 saves in his 50th career victory to lead the No. 16 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team to a 3-2 road victory against No. 15 Providence College on Friday night in Hockey East play at Schneider Arena.
UMass Lowell improved to 10-3-4 overall (5-1-3 HEA), while the Friars drop to 8-5-3 overall and 5-4-2 in Hockey East play.
"It was a great comeback effort on the road," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "Whenever you are down 2-0 and you can come back and win, that's a great game. Overall, I didn't like our first period, but we got better as the game went along."
Junior forward Connor Sodergren (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2 just 52 seconds into the third stanza. Junior forward Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ont.) gave the River Hawks their first lead of the night at 3-2 with a slapshot from the left point a little over a minute after Sodergren's tally.
The teams skated to a scoreless second period.
Senior forward Kenny Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska) cut the PC lead to 2-1 as he scored his fifth goal of the season on a penalty shot with 5:08 to go in the first stanza. Hausinger beat PC's Michael Lackey with a wrister from the low slot over his glove hand. It was the first penalty shot goal by a River Hawk since Jake Kamrass accomplished the feat at Omaha on October 29, 2016.
Providence got on the scoreboard first on an extra attacker goal by Michael Callahan just seven minutes into the opening stanza. Greg Printz gave the Friars a 2-0 lead with a power play tally for his 10th of the season less than 1:30 later. Callahan posted a game-high six shots on goal for Providence.
Wall made his 16th start of the season for the River Hawks, posting 10 saves in each of the first two periods and 15 saves in the final frame. Lackey amassed 13 saves in the loss for the Friars.
Freshman forward Andre Lee (Karlstad, Sweden) totaled two assists on the night and now have six points (1g,5a) in his last three games for the River Hawks. Matt Brown (Wood Ridge, N.J.) and Colin O'Neill (Odenton, Md.) each tallied a team-high three shots on goal for the River Hawks.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, December 7th for the series finale against Providence. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 6 p.m. The game will be streamed nationally and internationally via CBS All-Access.
