No. 13 River Hawks edge CCHL All-Stars in exhibition, 3-1

Andre Lee, Zach Kaiser and Sam Knoblauch all scored in the victory for the River Hawks

LOWELL, Mass. -- The No. 13 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team skated to a 3-1 victory against the CCHL All-Stars in exhibition play on Sunday afternoon at the Tsongas Center.

"We got an opportunity to shake a lot of rust," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "I thought it was a good hockey game, it was a clean hockey game and it's a good way to get back into game shape. We have a long ways to go in a lot of areas."

Sophomore forward Sam Knoblauch (Rochester, Mich.) added an empty-net goal with a little over a minute left to seal the win for the River Hawks.

The team skated to a scoreless second period. UMass Lowell outshot the CCHL All-Stars, 39-22 for the game, which included a 15-4 advantage in the final frame and a 15-8 edge in the opening stanza.

Freshman forward Andre Lee (Karlstad, Sweden) opened the scoring in the game for UMass Lowell just 3:30 into the game. Zach Kaiser (Orangeville, Ont.) added to the River Hawks lead less than six minutes later to make it a 2-0 game. David Gagnon notched a power-play goal for the CCHL team late in the opening period to cut the River Hawks lead to one goal.

Freshman Logan Neaton (Brighton, Mich.) registered 17 saves for the River Hawks, starting the game and playing the first 40 minutes, while senior Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) played the final 20 minutes, stopping four shots. Jake Begley started the game for the CCHL All-Stars, stopping 16 shots in the first half of the game, while Rico DiMatteo came in and made 20 stops the rest of the way.

Connor Sodergren (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Chris Schutz (Keller, Texas.) each notched a game-high five shots on goal for UMass Lowell.

The River Hawks return to action in Hockey East play on Saturday, January 4th at Merrimack College. Game time from Lawler Arena is 7 p.m. in North Andover, Mass. The game will be streamed nationally and internationally via CBS All-Access.
