LOWELL, Mass. – Junior
Obadiah Noel (Frederick, Md.) logged a game-high 18 points to help the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (3-5) erase a 12-point disadvantage and earn a 75-63 victory against Brown (4-2) on Tuesday.
Â
"I'm real happy today," said Head Coach
Pat Duquette. "It was a tough last weekend for us, we all know that. I think we did some soul searching, coaches and players. We had a long film session. We talked about making winning plays. We didn't play perfect today, but I thought our guys responded great. They looked at themselves critically and wanted to get better, and that showed tonight."
Â
Noel, who added four steals, led five double-digit scorers for the River Hawks en route to snapping a three-game skid. Graduate student
Christian Lutete (Silver Spring, Md.) added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while junior
Jordyn Owens (Montclair, N.J.) logged a season-best 13 points of his own. Freshman
Ron Mitchell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and graduate student
Josh Gantz (Grove City, Ohio) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Â
Â
The River Hawks jumped out to an early seven-point margin with the help of five straight points from Owens, but the Bears responded with 12 unanswered to pull in front, 14-9, with 15:01 remaining in the first half. Lutete snapped the silence before Noel knocked down a three to erase the difference, although the visitors would put together a 17-5 stretch to regain the upper hand, 31-19, at 6:32.
Â
Brown maintained at least a nine point buffer until Noel sparked a 13-2 run that was capped off by a triple from Gantz to knot the score at 37-37 with less than a minute to go in the period. However, Tamenang Choh hit a jumper at the buzzer to send the Bears into the break on top, 39-37.
Â
The River Hawks came out of halftime on the attack, scoring seven of the first nine points of the second to lead, 44-41, with 17:35 left to play. The visitors then cut the difference to one on four occasions in the next several minutes before sinking a three to pull in front once more, 57-56, at 7:14.
Â
UMass Lowell continued to battle with seven straight points, including a three from Lutete, to take the lead for good. The Bears were within one possession at 66-63, but the River Hawk defense locked in and did not give up another point in the final four and a half minutes of action, securing the 75-63 win.
Â
The Bears still lead the all-time series against UMass Lowell, 4-1. The River Hawks continue their homestand on Sunday, December 1 when they host Central Connecticut State in their first Tsongas Center game of the season at 1 p.m.
