Maroto Tobias' Brace Pushes River Hawks Over Stony Brook, 2-1

UMass Lowell Clinched Third Consecutive America East Tournament Berth

LOWELL, Mass. -- Sancho Maroto Tobias (Alcobendas, Madrid) scored his first career goal and added his second as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team picked up the 2-1 win against Stony Brook, and clinched a berth in the America East Championship on Senior Night.

The River Hawks (8-6-1, 3-3-0) will appear in the tournament for the third straight season since becoming eligible entering the 2017 campaign. A year after capturing the regular-season title, the Seawolves (4-10-2, 1-5-0) will miss out on postseason action.

"It was a good overall performance from the group, especially after halftime," noted Head Coach Christian Figueora. "We had some opportunities in the first half but it was a little slow and they did a good job to regroup at the break. It was good for the guys to come out and get the early goal after intermission and to set the tempo. It was a difficult final 40 minutes and Stony Brook did a great job to knock us off our game, but once again the guys did a good job to get a hold of the game and get that second goal."

Maroto Tobias broke the scoreless draw in the 50th minute as he collected a rebound off of Denis Petro's (Michalovce, Slovakia) attempt in front, and calmly one-timed the carom into the open net for his first score in only his fourth career appearance. The freshman completed the brace 16 minutes later, taking a long ball from Ivan Blaskic (Zagreb, Croatia) and beating the Stony Brook keeper on a one-on-one opportunity, in what turned out to be the game-winning score.

UMass Lowell outshot the visitors, 21-9, including an 11-3 advantage in the opening 45 minutes. Maroto Tobias led the lineup with his five attempts off the bench, and Stanley Alves (Minas Gerais, Brazil) added four of his own.

Patrik Gujic (Bjelovar, Croatia) had his program record consecutive shutout minutes streak snapped at 563:00 when Stony Brook got one goal back in the 71st minute.

The River Hawks wrap up the regular season at Hartford on November 6 (7 p.m.) The winner of the match will earn the final top-four seed and will host the America East Quarterfinals.
