HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 12 UMass Lowell Hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie at UConn on Friday night at the XL Center in Hockey East play.
UMass Lowell is now 7-2-4 overall (4-0-3 HEA), while UConn moves to 2-5-2 overall (1-3-1 HEA). The River Hawks are unbeaten (4-0-2) in their last six contests against the Huskies dating back to December 3, 2016.
"This was another harsh Hockey East lesson," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "In a sense that if you don't show up, you are going to get it taken to you. I thought we chased the game for the majority of the game today."
Sophomore forward
Lucas Condotta (Georgetown, Ont.) had a great chance for the River Hawks with a little over six minutes to go in the third period with a nice drive through the crease, but UConn's Tomas Vomacka made the save with his right pad.
Kale Howarth gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead with another power play goal with 1:52 left in the second stanza, but freshman forward
Matt Brown (Wood Ridge, N.J.) scored his fifth goal of the season on a nifty backhander on a breakaway with 44.1 seconds left in the second to tie the game at 3-3.
Senior forward
Colin O'Neill (Odenton, Md.) gave the River Hawks a 2-1 lead with a wrister from the right faceoff circle on the power play for his second tally of the year with 10 minutes to go in the second period. Marc Gatcomb tied the game less than a minute later for the Huskies for third goal of the season.
UConn's Alexander Payusov tied the game at 1-1 with a man advantage goal of his own with less than a minute left in the opening stanza with a blast from the left point.
The River Hawks opened the scoring at 12:08 of the first period with a power play goal marker from junior forward
Connor Sodergren (Tewkbury, Mass.) who was parked at the UConn net front for his first goal of the season. Sodergren received a centering pass from
Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ont.) at the left half wall.
Senior goalie
Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) registered 29 saves for the River Hawks, while his counterpart Vomacka recorded 12 stops for the Huskies in the tie.
Sophomore defenseman
Jon McDonald (Livonia, Mich.) finished the night with two assists for the River Hawks. Freshman forward
Zach Kaiser (Orangeville, Ont.) totaled a team-high four shots on goal for UMass Lowell in the tie.
UMass Lowell went 2-for-3 on the power play on the evening.
The River Hawks return to action in the series finale against the Huskies on Saturday, November 16
