No. 12 River Hawks drop series finale to UConn, 2-1

Sophomore defenseman Jon McDonald scored the lone goal for the River Hawks

LOWELL, Mass. -- The No. 12 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team fell to UConn, 2-1 in the series finale at the Tsongas Center on Saturday night in Hockey East play.

The River Hawks drop to 7-3-4 overall (4-1-3 HEA), while UConn improves to 3-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in Hockey East.

"Overall, it's a tough feeling, we haven't had this for a while, it's been three and a half weeks without a loss," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "We lacked in our finishing and execution, and that lack of finishing came back to bite us. They played a good game, they were hungry this weekend and overall they deserved to win."

Sophomore defenseman Jon McDonald (Livonia, Mich.) scored a extra attacker power play tally for his first goal of the season with 1:01 left in the third, but it wasn't enough for the River Hawks. McDonald posted two shots on goal and a team-high four blocked shots on the night.

Wyatt Newpower opened the scoring in the game for Huskies at the 14:25 mark of the second stanza to make it a 1-0 game. UConn's Brian Rigali notched his third goal of the year midway thru the third period to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.

Sophomore forward Lucas Condotta (Georgetown, Ont.) won a game-high 12 face-offs in the losing effort. Carl Berglund (Hammaro, Sweden) amassed a game-high six shots on goal, while Andre Lee (Karlstad, Sweden) added five shots for UMass Lowell.

The River Hawks outshot UConn, 30-28 for the game, which included a 16-8 shot advantage in the third period.

Senior goalie Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) stopped 26 shots in his 13th start of the season, while his counterpart Tomas Vomacka recorded 29 saves in his third win of the season for the Huskies.

UMass Lowell returns to action for the Turkey Leg Classic on Friday, November 29th against Rensselaer. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 4 p.m. The game will be streamed nationally and internationally via CBS All-Access.
