ALBANY, N.Y. – For the second year in a row the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (4-8-2, 3-2-1) clinched a berth in the 2019 America East Tournament and will await final results for the conference standings . Sophomore
Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the season despite the River Hawks being dealt a 2-1 double overtime loss to UAlbany (7-5-3, 4-1-1) on the road Sunday.
"We had a slow start in the first 20 minutes which took us a while to build into the game," stated head coach
Mira Novak. "I give credit to my team for coming out hungry after halftime and getting the goal back to put us into overtime. It was really hard, but I felt like we dealt with the game defensively and unfortunately the corner kick in the second overtime was the difference maker today."
The Great Danes got on the board in the 18th minute of the game when sisters Jasmine and Jada Colbert connected off a cross pass pushing the ball into the bottom center of the net, putting the score at 1-0.
One minute later the River Hawks saw their opportunity when a free kick was awarded and redshirt junior
Courtney Coleman (Antioch, Ill.) rocked a shot that nearly found its way into the net but just knocked off the top of the crossbar.
Heading into the half, UMass Lowell lead with six recorded shots compared to the Great Danes two.
13 minutes into the second half, sophomore
Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) sent a pass to fellow classmate Nelson who pushed the ball off the Albany keepers' knee and into the back of the net, equalizing the score 1-1.
With seconds remaining in the second half sophomore
Kristin Birgisdottir (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) looked to put an end to the game when she put a shot on target from eight yards out, only to be stopped by Albany's Sophia Chen.
After a scoreless 10 minutes the River Hawks headed into their second double overtime this week. Two minutes in and Kendra Harbinger found the back of the net for the Great Danes off a corner kick, bringing the final score to 2-1.
Up next, the River Hawks will welcome Binghamton for a senior day celebration at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, before heading to Durham, N.H. to face off against New Hampshire in a Thursday night Halloween show down set for 7 p.m.
"Now it's time to heal up going into this game against Binghamton," commented Novak. "We have to get ready for this last stretch of regular season play if we want to win the whole thing."
