LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (4-9-2, 3-3-1 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (9-5-2, 3-3-1 AE) 1-0 in a rainy afternoon senior day matchup on Sunday at Cushing Field.
"We got outplayed in terms of effort today," stated head coach
Mira Novak. "Binghamton came here fighting for the playoffs and we paid the price because we weren't the dominant team."
After a free kick was awarded to the Bearcats in the 22nd minute, Erin Theiller rebounded the blocked shot and sent a cross pass to teammate Sarah Dibble who pushed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, bringing the score to 1-0.
At the half, the Bearcats lead with five shots compared to the River Hawks one. Redshirt junior
Lauren Huff (Brandon, Fla.) recorded two saves compared to Mackensie Hanna's one.
Coming alive in the second half, the River Hawks saw their chance when three corner kicks were awarded in a span of two minutes. Freshman
Anna Edson (Beverly, Mass.) ripped a shot on target only to be saved by the keeper, while sophomore
Hailey DuBose (Raynham, Mass.) sent the ball just to the right of the net.
A last-ditch effort for the River Hawks came in the 89th minute when redshirt junior
Courtney Coleman (Antioch, Ill.) rocked a shot from 20 yards out, only to slip just above the crossbar, ending the game at 1-0.
The River Hawks will see their last round of regular season action when they hit the road for a Halloween night showdown with New Hampshire on October 31 at 7 p.m.
"This will be the game that will decide our season," commented Novak. "Were getting some players back and we'll need to buckle down in order to prepare for Thursday night's game."
