LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (4-7-2, 3-1-1) played the Vermont Catamounts (3-7-3, 1-3-2) to a 0-0 draw under the lights of Cushing Field on Thursday night. Graduate student
Annerens Tijm (Tjerkgaast, Netherlands) recorded six saves for the River Hawks.
"It took a long time today to figure out how we wanted to play," stated head coach
Mira Novak. "The second half was better in creating more opportunities in terms of shots, but we just didn't create enough to score."
Three minutes into the match sophomore
Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) looked to strike first for the River Hawks when she blasted a shot from 20 yards out, only to ricochet off the crossbar.
Following some back-and-forth field play, Vermont saw their first bout of action when three Catamounts placed shots on goal, with none of them hitting the back of the net.
After a scoreless first half, the Catamounts lead with six shots compared to UMass Lowell's four.
Pushing into the second half, the River Hawks saw another scoring opportunity when redshirt sophomore
Karah Fleet (Halifax, Nova Scotia) received a pass from sophomore
Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) in the 58th minute, Fleet dribbled around the defenders only to have the ball just miss the left corner of the net.
With neither team able to notch the game winner, the match rolled into extra minutes. In double overtime, sophomore
Dunja Mostarac (Belgrade, Serbia.) made a diving block with just minutes to spare, to keep the Catamounts off the board, ending the game in a 0-0 tie.
Up next, the River Hawks will have a rematch of last years America East Championship when they travel to UAlbany for a Sunday afternoon matchup at 1 p.m.
"It will be interesting to hit the road and play against one of the top teams in the conference," commented Novak. "We have two days to get ready and pull together a better performance in order to step things up."
