LOWELL, Mass. -- Senior goaltender Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) of the UMass Lowell Hockey team was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Hernberg recorded 33 saves in the 2-1 victory at No. 2 Massachusetts in Hockey East play on Friday night at the Mullins Center. He totaled 10+ stops in each period in his fourth win of the season, which included a game-high 12 saves in the third period against the Minutemen. It marked the eighth time in his River Hawk career he recorded 30+ saves in a start for UMass Lowell.

"Chris gave us a solid performance in his single game last weekend," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "Winning on the road is difficult and you need your goalie to provide you second chances to score. He gave us that opportunity and the team took it from there. Hernberg and Wall continue to battle for time in the net. It's a healthy competitive battle."

It marks the third time in his career he has earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Hernberg has posted a 4-2-0 record in six starts this season for the River Hawks, to go along with a 2.65 GAA and .904 save percentage with one shutout.

The River Hawks return to action on Friday, January 11th at Colgate. Game time from Class of 1965 Arena is 7:30 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
