PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The UMass Lowell Volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to host Providence College in the opening match of the 14th annual Friar Classic on Friday night at Alumni Hall. the set scores were 24-26, 25-18, 21-25 and 18-25.

UMass Lowell falls to 0-5 overall on the year, while Providence ups its record to 2-2 overall.

"That was the most fight we have shown all year, so that is definitely a positive." said UMass Lowell Head Coach Resa Provanzano. "We really went into this match wanting to focus on ourselves and cleaning up our hitting percentage and our blocks, and those were both personal best for us this year and I am really proud of that."

Senior middle blocker Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) amassed 10 kills, a team-best .444 hitting percentage and nine total blocks in the losing effort for UMass Lowell. Freshman outside hitter Kate Bilyeu (Omaha, Neb.) notched a career-high 11 kills with three total blocks, which included four kills in the second set alone.

UMass Lowell tallied 15 kills and hit at a .306 clip in its victory in the second frame and then followed that effort up with 12 kills in the third stanza. The River Hawks rattled off six straight points in the set to make it a 21-13 score and then Malia Randolph (McDonough, Ga.) finished the frame off with a set-clinching kill.

Junior McKenna Bova (Corona, Calif.) and Randolph split the setting duties, recording 24 and 18 assists, respectively.

Senior outside hitter Erica Cappellino (Penfield, N.Y.) had the match of her career with eight kills and 10 total digs for the River Hawks. Randolph and junior outside hitter Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and chipped in with six and five kills, respectively.

Senior libero Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) managed 16 digs in another strong defensive outing.

The River Hawks return to action on the final day of the Friar Classic on Saturday, September 1st with a 12:30 p.m. matchup with Brown and a 3:30 p.m. tilt against Fairleigh Dickinson at Alumni Hall.
