CHICAGO, Ill. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (0-2-0) dropped a 7-0 contest at DePaul (1-1-0) on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field.
The Blue Demons made it onto the board in the third minute with a goal from Franny Cerny, who sent the ball just inside the back left post off an assist from Madeline Frick.
Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) made a few big saves in the ensuing minutes, stopping a shot by DePaul's Morgan Turner with a diving save and then snagging the ball from Turner before she got a shot off on the next time down the field.
The Blue Demons went up 2-0 in the 23
rd minute when Turner scored an unassisted goal.
Lauren Huff (Brandon, Fla.) made her first appearance in net this season, checking in for Schneider in the 23
rd minute. She finished the game with eight saves.
Cerny scored her second goal of the game with a low ball to Huff's right side in the 29
th minute off an assist by Avery Hay. DePaul followed that up with a goal by Turner – her second of the afternoon – assisted by Cerny and Hay. The River Hawks headed into halftime trailing 0-4.
DePaul scored three more times in the second half, as Turner notched a hat trick and Hay scored off a penalty kick. Brooke Weitel added one in the 88
th minute.
UMass Lowell made strides in the second stanza, limiting the Blue Demons' scoring chances, allowing four fewer shots on goal than the first half.
Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) made her first career start, while
Halle Anderson (Stonington, Conn.) tallied her first shot on goal.
Ava Hoog (Ipswich, Mass.) and
Katherine Tato (Menlo Park, Calif.) made their first collegiate appearances in the game, rounding out a solid outing by the River Hawk freshmen.
The River Hawks' next matchup will be on Thursday at Cushing Field when they take on Colgate at 7 p.m.
