LOWELL, Mass. – Twenty members of the UMass Lowell Hockey team have been named to the 2017-18 Hockey East All-Academic Team which was announced Thursday morning by the conference office.

UMass Lowell had the second largest number of players honored by the eleven school conference.  The 20 student-athletes also reflects an increase from 19 a year ago and 13 in 2015-16.

"We have dedicated young men who exemplify what it is to be student athletes in college," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "This serves as further proof that someone can strive for excellence on the ice and in the classroom."

The River Hawk hockey team also earned the university's Bob Griffin Academic Award with the highest grade point average, 3.496, among men's teams.

Senior forward Jake Kamrass (Atlanta, Ga.) was honored as a distinguished scholar after earning All-Academic status in all four of his varsity seasons.

One River Hawk, junior defenseman Avni Berisha (Lake Ariel, Penn.), is making his third appearance on the All-Academic Team.  There were eight second time honorees.  That group included senior forward John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.), juniors goalie Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) and forwards Connor Wilson (Calgary, Alta.) and Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.) and Sophomores forward Kenney Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska), forward Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.), foward Nick Marin (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and forward Colin O'Neill (Odenton, Md.)

Those whose names appeared on the All-Academic Team for the first time included senior defenseman Tommy Panico (Wall, N.J.), junior forward Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.), sophomores defenseman Mattias Goranson (Slottsbron, Sweden), and goalie Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) and freshmen defenseman Anthony Baxter (Oakville, Ont.), defenseman Croix Evingson (Anchorage, Alaska), forward Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ont.), forward Cole Paskus (Madison, Wis.), and forward Connor Sodergren (Tewksbury, Mass.) and redshirt freshman Chris Schutz (Keller, Texas).
