VESTAL, N.Y. -- In the series finale, the UMass Lowell baseball team stayed within striking distance until the final few innings as Binghamton pulled away for the 10-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) homered in the ninth inning, and
Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) drove in the other run with a RBI grounder in the seventh frame for the River Hawks (10-17, 3-6).
The Bearcats (9-15, 5-4) held a 2-0 lead after six full in a game that was delayed three times by snow delays in the first five and a half frames. A pair of run scoring singles in the second and sixth frames, respectively, built the slim advantage for the hosts.
UMass Lowell was held without a hit until
Cam Climo's (Billerica, Mass.) infield single with one out in the fifth, but the visitors could not break up the shutout until Castellanos' assist.
Jeff Mejia and Passatempo both singled to have runners on the corners and the freshman was able to cut the deficit in half.
Bingamton broke the game open with four runs in each the seventh and eight innings, and Passatempo led off the final frame with his fifth homer of the season. River Hawk pitching struck out nine batters as
Connor Metelski (Wall Township, N.J.) and
Henry Funaro (Lowell, Mass.) recorded four each.
UMass Lowell has a pair of non-conference matchups on the road early next week, before an America East series against UMBC.
