HANOVER, N.H. – Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) drove in five, including a grand slam, to propel the UMass Lowell baseball team past Dartmouth in the 12-8 win on Tuesday afternoon.
The River Hawks (11-17) used an eight-run fifth inning to snap their four-game skid and pick up their first non-conference win since the middle of March. Maiola and
Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) both homered and drove in multiple runs, including the freshman's first career blast.
Tied at 2-2, UMass Lowell sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth frame, scoring eight runs on four hits and four walks to take control of the contest. Maiola opened the inning with a walk and scored two batters later on
Russ Olive's (Chelmsford, Mass.) deep double to put the visitors back on top, 3-2.
Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) and Castellanos added two more runs by way of a bases-loaded walk and single, before Maurice's sac fly.
After a two-out walk to reload the bases, Maiola sent his second career slam into the net over the wall in left to cap off the inning.
In his first career start,
Matt Kerin (Quincy, Mass.) allowed one run while scattering five hits in three innings.
Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season with three innings in relief.
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) began the offensive output early on with a leadoff triple in the second and crossed the plate on
Joey Castellanos' (Nutley, N.J.) infield single. After a pair of walks that loaded the bases, the freshman scored on Maiola's sacrifice fly to double the lead.
The Big Green (7-15-1) tied it up with solo runs in the third and fourth, coming on a home run and single. The hosts added another run in the fifth after the River Hawks' explosion to get one back and trailed 10-3.
Maurice added his solo shot in the seventh and
Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) provided the 12th run with a sac fly an inning later.
Dartmouth was able to score four times in the eighth on two hits and a pair of miscues, and added a the hosts' final run in the ninth.
UMass Lowell heads to Amherst for a 3 p.m. contest against Massachusetts tomorrow.
