River Hawks take out NJIT in regular-season finale, 9-3

Austin Lane notched his seventh career hat trick in the 8th win of the season for the River Hawks

LOWELL, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Austin Lane (Aurora, Ont.) notched his seventh career hat trick to pace the UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team to a 9-3 victory against NJIT on Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale at Cushing Field Complex on Senior Day.

The River Hawks finish regular-season play with a 8-7 overall mark, while NJIT ends its season at 1-15 overall.

Senior midfielder Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) and sophomore attackman Dan Cozzi (Reading, Mass.) each finished with three points on the day. Phillips added two goals with eight shots and seven shots on goal, while Cozzi added two assists. 

The teams were tied 2-2 at halftime, but the River Hawks scored seven goals in the second half to secure the victory, which included the final three goals in the contest. 

Freshman goalie Hunter Braun (Hartland, Mich.) recorded eight saves in his eighth win of the season, while NJIT's Alexzander Hunt totaled 15 stops in the losing effort. 

The River Hawks outshot NJIT, 36-24 in the game, which included a 11-5 advantage in the fourth quarter and a 7-1 edge in the opening frame.

Freshman Jake Zablocki (Dudley, Mass.) totaled a game-high seven ground balls and won nine of 14 faceoffs (64%) for the River Hawks. 

The River Hawks honored its 10-member senior class in a pre-game ceremony in the final home game of their collegiate careers, which included attackmen Sean Tyrrell, Matt Balter (Albany, N.Y., along with midfielders Sam Klingsporn (Aloha, Ore.), Jon Phillips, Cory Highfield (Georgetown, Ont.), Jared Zaniewski (Sandwich, Mass.), Brandon Luitwieler (Calgary, Alta.), Zack Schwartz (Huntington, N.Y.), Will Puduski (Westford, Mass.) and defender Bain Schroeder (Ellicott City, Md.). Four-year student manager Brian Porcella (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was also honored prior to the game. 

No. 4 seed UMass Lowell returns to action on Thursday, May 3rd against top seed UAlbany in the America East semifinals. Game time from John Fallon Field in Albany, N.Y. is 7 p.m.
