River Hawks complete comeback vs. UMBC with 10-7 victory

Sean Tyrrell notched seven points (4g,3a), while Hunter Braun stopped another 20 shots

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior attackman Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alta.) posted a career-high seven points and tied a career-high with four goals to propel the UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team to a 10-7 comeback win against UMBC in America East play on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex.

The River Hawks improve to 5-5 overall (2-1 AE) with the victory, while the Retrievers fall to 2-7 overall (0-2 AE) with the loss. With the victory the River Hawks established a new Division I record for single-season victories and earn their second victory in America East this season, which is also a new program record.

UMass Lowell tallied six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to complete to comeback. Junior midfielder Austin Lane (Aurora, Ont.) scored his 16th of the season to give the River Hawks the lead for good with 1:55 to play in the final quarter. UMass Lowell added two more goal in the final 90 seconds to seal the victory.

"We had a game plan, but they got off to an early lead, we had trouble in a couple of areas we normally do well," said Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "I give the guys credit to be able to come back in the fourth quarter and roll off the last six goals. They kept at it, they stayed determined and really finished strong. I am really proud of their effort."

Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) finished the day with four points (2g,2a), while Lane notched three points (2g,1a) in the victory.

UMBC led UMass Lowell, 5-3 at haltime.

Senior attackman Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alta.) scored two goal in the first quarter for the River Hawks, while Phillips added a goal in the opening frame.

Freshman goalie Hunter Braun (Hartland, Mich.) stopped 20 shots in his eighth consecutive start for the River Hawks, while Tommy Lingner managed five saves for UMBC in the losing effort. Braun's 20 saves were one short of tying his school record, which he previously set twice this season.

Senior Will Puduski (Westford, Mass.) led the way again on defense for the River Hawks with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.

The River Hawks owned an 11-5 shot advantage in the fourth quarter vs. the Retrievers.

Max Haldeman and Steven Zichelli each notched two goals apiece in the loss for the Retrievers.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Saturday, April 7th at Vermont. Game time from Virtue Field in Burlington, Vt. is 1 p.m.
