River Hawks Stumble Late in 6-5 Walk-Off Loss at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the second consecutive game the UMass Lowell baseball team saw a lead of three of more runs disappear, as James Madison walked off in the bottom of the ninth for the 5-4 victory on Saturday evening.

With one out and a runner on second, Josh Jones sent a double down the left field line to cap the Dukes' (12-7) second win of the series. James Madison erased a 5-2 deficit with four runs in the final three frames.

Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) and Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) each drove in two for the River Hawks (6-10), while Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Maiola both recorded four hits in five at bats.

JMU took a 2-0 lead on three hits and an error with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, but UMass Lowell quickly responded with four of its own in the third to take a two-run advantage.

With two outs in the inning, Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) was the first of six straight River Hawks to reach with a single to left. After a walk, Olive singled to score the freshman and Maiola followed suit with a hit to plate Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.). Climo delivered the big knock of the third with a double that scored two to put the visitors on top.

Olive and Maiola combined to tack on another run in the fifth, with Olive picking up a two-out triple and the senior scoring him on a single.

The Dukes had runners on first and third with no outs in the sixth, but Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) picked up two of his eight strikeouts to maintain the advantage. The River Hawks had their own golden opportunity to break open the contest, as they loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh but came up empty.

James Madison cut the deficit to 5-4 with two in the seventh and tied up the contest in the eighth.

The teams meet in the series finale, tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
