HARRISONBURG, Va. – Down to his last strike with two outs in the ninth inning,
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) capped off a three-run inning with a two-run home run as the UMass Lowell baseball team completed the 7-6 comeback win in the series finale at James Madison.
The River Hawks (7-10) entered the final frame trailing 6-4 following two straight runs from the Dukes (12-8), and had two men on with two outs before a double steal and a throwing error cut the deficit to one, before Olive's heroics.
The junior drove in three and scored twice with two hits for UMass Lowell, and
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) added a pair of RBI and hits as well.
James Madison scored runs in the sixth and eighth after the visitors battled back to tie the game at 4-4. The Dukes offense jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead by way of a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, courtesy of Adam Sisk.
With a pair of single runs in the second and third innings, UMass Lowell pulled ahead 2-1. After a
Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) and an error to put runners on second and third,
Joey Castellanos picked up a RBI with a grounder to third to get the River Hawks on the board. Climo recorded his first double of the contest to score
Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) in the third to take the lead.
The first three batters reached in the fourth for James Madison and Sisk drove them all in with a bases clearing double as the hosts retook the lead at 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, Olive and Climo delivered back-to-back hits to score two runs and bring UMass Lowell back even at 4-4.
Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) drew a one-out walk and crossed the plate two batters later on Olive's two-bagger. Climo scored Olive on his single to center for his second RBI of the day.
Behind a leadoff triple in the seventh, the Dukes were able to pull back ahead 5-4 after a sacrifice fly.
Luke Tomczyk (Chili, N.Y.) picked up his first win of the season, and
Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) recorded save number three. UMass Lowell starter
Collin Duffley (Manchester, N.H.) struck in five in three innings of work.
The River Hawks return to the Bay State for their final non-conference test before America East play, taking on Holy Cross on March 21 at 5 p.m.
