River Hawks edge out Manhattan at home, 11-9

Senior Jon Phillips totaled a career-high six points and five goals

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior midfielder Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) scored a career-high six points and five goals to pace the UMass Lowell Lacrosse team to a 11-9 victory against Manhattan in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field Complex.

The River Hawks improve to 3-3 overall with the win, while the Jaspers fall to 3-4 overall with the loss.

"It's great to get a win, we knew we were in for a battle," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "I think their goalie is one of the best in the country, we knew it would be hard to put the ball in the net against them. I give our guys a lot of credit for understanding the range and putting them away."

Senior Will Puduski (Westford, Mass.) and freshman Kyle Laforge (Tyngsboro, Mass.) made a great defensive play with seven seconds left to cause a Manhattan turnover to seal the win for the River Hawks.

Senior attackman Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alta.) notched a game-high four assists for the River Hawks.

Phillips and Matt Balter tacked on the 10th and 11th goals for UMass Lowell to secure the victory, after Manhattan scored six goals in the second half.

Phillips scored his four of the day less than five minutes later to make it 8-4 in favor of the River Hawks.

The River Hawks scored four of the five goals in the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead to the locker room at halftime. Freshman midfielder Domenic Giachello (Somers, Conn.) notched his first career goal as a River Hawk with less than six minutes left in the second frame. With 43 seconds left in the first half, Phillips notched his eighth career hat trick.

Senior midfielder Sam Klingsporn (Aloha, Ore.) also added two goals in the first half for UMass Lowell.

UMass Lowell owned a 3-2 lead at the end of the opening quarter after getting two goals from Phillips.

Freshman Harrison Morrill (Hyde Park, Mass.) scored his third career goal to open the scoring just 1:35 into the game.

Freshman Hunter Braun (Hartland, Mich.) made his fourth consecutive start for the River Hawks, posting 12 saves, while Michael Zingaro stopped 12 shots in the loss for Manhattan.

Austin Collard finished the day with a team-high three goals in the loss for the Jaspers, while Luke Hanson and Parker Giarratana each totaled two goals apiece.

UMass Lowell returns to action to host sister school Massachusetts on Tuesday, March 13th. Game time from Cushing Field Complex is 3 p.m.
