NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UMass Lowell baseball team suffered a 15-0 loss in the weekend series opener at No. 13 Vanderbilt on Friday night.
The River Hawks (2-3) fought hard in the first few innings, but the Commodores (5-1) were able to break open the contest with five runs in the fourth and another three in the fifth.
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) and
Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) each picked up two hits, and
Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) struck out six batters.
After a two-out run in the second, Vanderbilt was able to capitalize on five walks and delivered a pair of doubles to open the 6-0 advantage.
The two teams will take the diamond for game two tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
Jack Riley (Worcester, Mass.) will make his second start for the River Hawks.
