NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UMass Lowell baseball team saw No. 13 Vanderbilt clinch the series with a 15-2 decision on Saturday afternoon.
The River Hawks (2-4) led 1-0 after four and a half innings, but saw the Commodores (6-1) score 10 times in the bottom of the fifth. The hosts used a three-run home run and a grand slam in the frame to pull away.
With two outs in the fourth, UMass Lowell strung three singles together as
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) was able to score
Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead. Passatempo scored both runs for UMass Lowell, as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the sixth asfter a leadoff double.
The trio of Passatempo,
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) and
Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) each recorded two hits, as they combined for six of the River Hawks' 10 hits.
Before he reached trouble in the fifth, UMass Lowell starter
Jack Riley (Worcester, Mass.) struck out seven Commodores.
The final game of the series is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Freshman
Henry Funaro (Lowell, Mass.) will look to build upon the impressive start to his career.
