River Hawks in the Pros: Alumni Update

LOWELL, Mass. -- Six former River Hawks are on National Hockey League rosters and several more appear to be knocking on the door.

This is a quick peek at who is playing where and how they are doing.

Around the NHL

Christian Folin, Defenseman, Philadelphia Flyers
Folin has seen limited action with the Flyers, his third NHL team in his six year career.  Folin has appeared in 17 games for Philadelphia with one-assist and is a plus-7.

Ron Hainsey, Defenseman, Toronto Maple Leafs
Hainsey,a 16-year veteran of the NHL, has been a key contributor for the Toronto Maple Leafs who sit in second place in the NHL Atlantic Division.  Playing in all of the team's 34 games, Hainsey has three-goals and 12-points.  He is second among Maple Leaf defensemen in scoring.

Connor Hellebuyck, Goalie, Winnipeg Jets
Hellebuyck has back-boned a Winnipeg club that is battling for the top spot in both the Central Division and the Western Conference of the NHL.  Hellebuyck has a has 15-9-0-1 record with a 2.90 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.  The 15-wins rank third in the league.

Carter Hutton, Goalie, Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres have been one of the surprise teams in the NHL this season and Hutton has been a big part of it.  The Sabres have the third best record in the Eastern Conference and Hutton, for the first time in his seven-year NHL career, is the team's starting goalie.  He has responded with a 13-9-0-2 record, a 2.60 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.  He had a personal best eight-game winning streak.

Chad Ruhwedel, Defenseman, Pittsburgh Penguins
Ruhwedel, in his seventh NHL season, has seen limited duty on the blue line for the Penguins.  He has played in 11-games this season without a point.

Scott Wilson, Forward, Buffalo Sabres
Wilson has yet to play in a game this season and he works his way back from an ankle fracture suffered when he collided with defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen in practice shortly before the start of the season.  He underwent surgery in early October and is said to be close to returning.


Around the AHL

Kevin Boyle, Goalie, San Diego Gulls
Boyle has been sharing the goaltending responsibilities playing in just over half of the Gulls games this season.  He has a 7-5-0-0 record, a 3.15 goals against average and a .903 save percentage for the Anaheim affiliate.

Joe Gambardella, Forward, Bakersfield Condors
Gambardella in his second season playing for the Condors, an affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, has shown continued growth in his game.  Gambardella leads the Condors in goals with ten and points with 19.  He also is a plus-7.

Michael Kapla, Defenseman, Binghamton Devils
Kapla has been playing a steady solid defensive game for the New Jersey Devils affiliate.  Kapla has picked up nine-points, all assists, in 28-games on the blue line.

C.J. Smith, Forward, Rochester Americans
Smith has been having a strong year for this Buffalo Sabres affiliate.  The left wing has ten-goals and 23-points.  He is second on the team in goals and third in points.  Smith is a plus-9 and has been whistled for penalties only four times.

Also of note
Former River Hawks John Edwardh, Chris Forney, Ben Holmstrom and Terrence Wallin have all played at least a handful of games in the American Hockey League this season.
