River Hawks edged by Binghamton on Senior Day in five sets

Katherine Claybaugh totaled a match-high 14 kills in the losing effort for the River Hawks

LOWELL, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell Volleyball team was edged by Binghamton in five sets on Sunday afternoon at Costello Athletic Center in America East play on Senior Day. The set scores were 20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 20-25 and 12-15.

The River Hawks drop to 4-21 overall (2-9 AE) with the loss, while the Bearcats improve to 5-18 overall (3-7 AE).

"It was a good match, obviously wished we would have won, but they showed a lot of fight," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Resa Provanzano. "It was a rollercoaster of consistency, which starts with serve receive, we have a week here and we are going to keep talking about that and see if we can put it together before Albany."

Junior outside hitter Katherine Claybaugh (Alamo, Calif.) totaled a team-best 14 kills and 17 digs in the losing effort for the River Hawks, which included both set-clinching kills in the second and third frames.

Freshman outside hitter Kate Bilyeu (Omaha, Neb.) chipped in with 13 kills. Senior middle blocker Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) added nine kills, a team-best .400 hitting percentage and four total blocks.

Junior outside hitter Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) recorded seven kills and 10 digs for the River Hawks, while Erica Cappellino (Penfield, N.Y.) and Grace Burkett (Lakeside, Calif.) each posted five kills apiece.

Senior libero Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) and freshman defensive specialist Aleyna Kennel (Monument, Colo.) contributed 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

UMass Lowell's three-player senior class was honored in a pre-match ceremony as Adeniyi, Cappellino and Visvardis all played in the final home match of the collegiate careers.

The River Hawks amassed 13 kills in each of the second and third sets, posting a .290 hitting percentage in the third frame, after hitting at a .263 clip in the set two win.

Gabby Alicea recorded a match-high 19 kills in the win for Binghamton, while Samantha Gioiosa managed a match-high 20 digs for the Bearcats defense.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Saturday, November 10th at UAlbany in the regular-season finale in America East play. Game time from University Gym is 6 p.m.
