LOWELL, Mass. -- Owen Miller's (Medford, Mass.) first career goal in the 88th minute propelled the three-seeded UMass Lowell men's soccer team into the America East Semifinals with a 1-0 victory against No. 6 UAlbany on Saturday evening at Cushing Field.
In a rematch of the 2017 semifinals, the River Hawks (10-5-2) will travel north to take on New Hampshire on Wednesday, November 7 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats earned the two seed and a first-round bye in the tournament and defeated UMass Lowell, 2-0, on October 26.
Miller was able to poke the ball in the net past the diving keeper and defender at the post on the hosts sixth corner of the night. The play developed with
Ivan Blaskic (Zagreb, Croatia) getting a head on
Jakov Basic's (Zagreb, Croatia) delivery into the box, and Danny Vitiello knocked the ball away to Miller's foot.
"It was a tough day out there with the conditions, obviously both teams played in them, but I thought our guys handled them well," remarked Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "We were patient and waited for our opportunities and were able to take control of the game early on. Credit to UAlbany's players and coaches as they had a good game plan to make it rough on us, but I'm really proud of the way our guys handled it."
The Great Danes (8-10), who defeated UMass Lowell in last year's title game, were unable to generate a shot on target and could only produce three attempts, getting out shot by the River Hawks 14-3. Before Miller's heroics,
Dario Jovanovski (Zagreb, Croatia), Basic and
Roko Prsa (Sisak, Croatia) had the game's lone shots on goal.
For the first time since 1999-2005, UMass Lowell has won 10 games in a single season, and dating back to Division II the River Hawks have appeared in the semifinals in their last five postseason appearances.
